However, working diligently at your desk and starring at a computer screen without moving is putting you at risk for a dangerous blood clot.

It’s hard to avoid sitting at your desk when that is part of your job. Unfortunately, standing at your desk for long periods isn’t ideal for your health either as it may cause varicose vein formation. So what can you do? There are plenty of small changes you can make to your daily office routine to reduce your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis.

Avoiding Deskbound DVT

You can’t quit your job, but you can’t ignore the health risks either—so what’s a worker to do? If you happen to work at a desk for more than eight hours a day, you can try some of these workplace solutions to ward off DVT.

  • Say your words, don’t email them. Instead of sending a convenient email to a coworker in the building, pay them a visit. The extra walk to their desk will get your blood pumping and give you a chance to break free from the chains of your desk.
  • Print your paper on another floor. If another floor in your building is available for printing or faxing, go there instead. If you can only use the machines in your office, ask your supervisor if you can relocate them farther away from your desk. That way, you can walk a few extra steps every time you need to pick up a print.
  • Move your toes and your feet. If you listen to music while you work, tap your feet (quietly) to the beat of the song. Press your toes downward or curl them up periodically to keep blood flowing freely. If your shoes are too tight for movement, try wearing more pliable shoes to work.
  • Don’t wear tight pants. Tight clothing around the legs and waist restricts blood flow. Coupled with sitting for long periods of time, this can spell trouble for those at risk of deep vein thrombosis.
  • Don’t cross your legs or sit on your feet. These desk positions (that we’re all guilty of) cuts off blood circulation in your lower legs. Instead, sit with your legs slightly bent at the knee and your feet apart.
