Treatment for Facial Veins

Facial veins, though rarely dangerous, can make you feel self-conscious and badly affect your social life. Your local vein center in North Georgia has specialists ready to help you with this frustrating problem.

Many facial veins take the form of thread or spider veins, called telangiectasia. They look broken, but in fact they’re dilated. Women are more likely to suffer from these veins and seek vein treatment more than men. No one knows what causes them, but it may be a combination of genetics and skin type. Anything that increases the pressure in the veins can lead to thread veins, and many women develop this problem during pregnancy. Also, sun damage can cause the lower layer of the skin to weaken. When the skin is weak, the capillaries can no longer be held firmly. They collapse outwards, leading to thread veins.

Treatment Options:

Vascular laser treatment is the vein treatment many doctors prefer when it comes to facial veins, though they might perform sclerotherapy on varicose veins in the legs. This is because the facial veins run through the eyes and into the brain, and to strip them with saline solution or chemicals is dangerous. Such treatment can actually cause blindness, as well as anaphylactic shock, or bruising and blistering that takes years to fade.

Vascular lasers produce wavelengths of between 532 and 600 nanometers. These wavelengths are absorbed by the hemoglobin in the blood and are thus very good for removing spider veins. With laser surgery, you are given oral sedatives and local anesthesia. Your eyes are then covered with laser shields. The dermatologist will also wear goggles and a mask to protect their eyes during the operation. The laser beam is then emitted from a small pen to produce a tiny beam of light. When the operation begins, there’s a flash of light and a puff of smoke from vaporized tissue. The operation is usually bloodless because the tissue and the blood vessels are cauterized, and the beam of light lasts for such a short a time that scarring is also minimal.
