Unfortunately, desk jobs don’t give us much of a chance to stay active, and this can have a big impact on your health. Though deep vein thrombosis isn’t limited to office workers, it’s a problem that many people who spend their days parked behind a desk are at a higher risk of experiencing.

Common factors that increase your risk for DVT include:

  • Frequent traveling
  • Hospitalization or disability
  • Sedentary habits
  • Sitting for excessive periods of time

Habits like playing games or watching TV hours on end can also increase your risk for DVT. All in all, this means a lot of us may be unknowingly increasing our risk of the condition.

Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot develops in the deepest veins of the body, most often in the legs. If left untreated, the blood clot can break away and travel towards the lungs, where it can cause a potentially life-threatening condition called pulmonary embolism.

Despite the risk, most of us can’t afford to quit our desk jobs; and video games and TV may be some of your favorite ways to relax after a long way at the office. Don’t worry—there are things you can do to reduce your risk of DVT without fundamentally changing your way of life, like:

  • Getting an exercise ball: Try sitting on an exercise ball instead of the couch. This will keep your core and legs engaged as you work to remain balanced while enjoying some R&R. You can even swap out your desk chair for an exercise ball at work.
  • Take frequent walking breaks: Break up your day at the office with quick walks around the premises. This might include a short walk around the parking lot or a trip up and down a few flights of stairs.
  • Stand up to chat: When you are talking on the phone or with a coworker, stand up and walk around. Walk to a coworker’s cubicle instead of sending them an email to add even more steps to your day.

To prevent DVT, do what you can to stand and move more often. Take every opportunity to stand up and walk around at the office and at home. Doing this can reduce your risk of DVT without making too many substantial changes to your lifestyle.
