Fitness Tips for Fighting Varicose Veins

Most people understand the benefits of physical activity for weight loss or heart health, but many do not realize that there is an important connection between exercise and varicose veins as well.

Varicose veins develop as a result of improper blood flow, which often happens due to weakened leg muscles that are unable to move blood properly through the veins. Exercise, particularly exercises that strengthen the leg muscles, can help to prevent varicose veins by enhancing the muscles’ abilities to squeeze the veins, thereby keeping blood-flow on track.

  • Scissor Lifts: Using a yoga mat, lie on your back with your arms at your sides and your legs fully extended. Slowly begin to raise both legs, and while keeping both knees straight make a scissor motion, zigzagging your legs across one another until they are extended as far back as you can reach. Hold your legs in the air for at least five seconds before repeating the motion downwards. Try doing this activity at least ten times.
  • Pedaling: While sitting in a chair with your back upright, lift both of your feet off of the ground and begin to simulate a bicycle motion with your legs. This is a good activity that you can do when you are stuck at your desk all day to add more movement to your regular routine! Do spurts of this activity, pedaling for at least a minute and then repeating.

Doing leg exercises every day can help you to prevent varicose veins, and is also a great way to supplement your medical treatment plan to reduce the appearance of the enlarged veins.
